Orthotist
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prosthetics design and make replacement limbs. Orthotists work with patients
that need extra support for their muscles, spine, or limbs. Design, make, and
fit apparatuses made of plastic, wood, leather, and metal that help stabilize,
strengthen or replace body parts. They also make and fit devices that help
align limbs that have grown in crooked manner. They may work in clinics or may
own their own private business.
Salary: $25,000-$40,000
Educational
Requirements: Students should take challenging science, math, and English
courses in high school. Some colleges and universities offer bachelor’s degrees
in orthotic and prosthetic programs. There programs include courses in
astronomy, physics, mathematics. Mechanical drawing, and the use of materials
used in the making of devices. After a year of experience a person may apply
for a certificate.
